Planka: A Self-Hosted Trello-Style Kanban Board

Planka: A Self-Hosted Trello-Style Kanban Board

Planka is a kanban board in the style of Trello: boards, lists, and cards you drag between columns, with changes appearing live for everyone looking at the same board. It is one of the most polished self-hosted options for small teams and households.

Features

  • Real-time collaboration with drag and drop
  • Markdown card descriptions, checklists, labels, due dates, and attachments
  • Notifications through 100+ providers, such as email, Discord, Telegram, and ntfy
  • Two-factor authentication
  • A REST API
  • Multilingual interface

Editions

SSO (OIDC)No (removed in 2.2)Yes
Calendar, timeline, and map viewsNoYes
Recurring cards, templates, guest rolesNoYes
Mobile support, PDF exportNoYes

The Community Edition uses a fair-code “Fair Use” license: the source is visible and self-hosting is free, but it is not an OSI-approved open source license. Version 2.2.0 moved OIDC single sign-on out of the Community Edition. If you relied on SSO, that means staying on an older version, buying Pro, or using a forward-auth proxy such as Tinyauth or Authelia in front of it.

Deployment

Planka is a Node.js app with PostgreSQL, shipped with a production-ready Docker Compose file and backup and restore scripts. Helm charts are available for Kubernetes.

Alternatives

  • Vikunja: tasks plus kanban, list, and Gantt views, fully open source (AGPL)
  • Wekan: the long-running open source Trello clone
  • Kanboard: minimal and very lightweight
  • Plane: a larger project management tool, closer to Jira

License

Community Edition: PLANKA Fair Use License (fair-code). Pro Edition: commercial.
