The steam.deb package installs only a small bootstrapper application, not the full Steam client. On first launch, it downloads and installs the actual client and keeps it continuously updated afterward, which is why this entry doesn’t carry a fixed version number the way a normal application release would.
Installing on Debian/Ubuntu
sudo apt install ./steam.deb
The 32-bit compatibility libraries required by many games will be pulled in automatically as a dependency on 64-bit systems with multiarch enabled.
Proton and Windows Games
Steam Play, using Valve’s Proton compatibility layer (built on Wine), lets a large share of Windows-only games run natively on Linux without modification. Compatibility varies by title; the community-run ProtonDB site tracks reported compatibility for individual games before you buy.
Other Install Methods
Steam is also available as a Flatpak (com.valvesoftware.Steam on Flathub) and via Snap, both of which sandbox the client more heavily than the native .deb, which can occasionally cause friction with certain anti-cheat systems or controller support compared to the native package.
Verify Your Download
Steam’s own client handles subsequent update verification automatically once installed; the initial bootstrapper is fetched directly from Valve’s official CDN.
