About Fly.io
Fly.io runs applications as lightweight VMs called Machines, deployed close to users across a global network of regions, with a workflow built around Docker images and a single flyctl deploy command rather than manually provisioning and configuring a traditional VPS.
Pricing Model
Fly.io moved to pure pay-as-you-go pricing in October 2024, removing its previous fixed Hobby, Launch, and Scale subscription tiers entirely. There is no base monthly fee: you pay per second for the resources your Machines actually consume, plus separate charges for provisioned storage volumes (billed on size regardless of machine state) and egress bandwidth at $0.02/GB.
Real-World Costs
A minimal always-on app, one shared-cpu-1x Machine with 256MB RAM, runs around $1.94/month in pure compute. A more realistic small production setup, two API instances plus a small Postgres database, typically lands between $13 and $20/month. Dedicated-CPU Performance Machines for CPU-bound workloads start around $99/month. Dedicated IPv4 addresses add $2/month per app on top of compute costs.
Where It Fits
Fly.io suits developers comfortable with Docker who want their application running physically close to users worldwide without managing that geographic distribution manually. The lack of a fixed base plan is a genuine advantage for spiky or low-traffic workloads, since idle or low-usage apps cost close to nothing, but it also means costs require active monitoring rather than a predictable flat monthly bill.
Available in: 35+ regions across North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Oceania
