Signal Desktop mirrors conversations from a linked phone rather than operating as a fully independent account, messages, calls, and disappearing-message timers stay synced with the mobile app it’s paired to. All messages remain end-to-end encrypted using the Signal Protocol, the same encryption used by the mobile apps.
Installing on Debian/Ubuntu
Signal is distributed exclusively through its own signed APT repository rather than as a standalone downloadable package, since the client checks for updates through that same repository:
wget -O- https://updates.signal.org/desktop/apt/keys.asc | \
gpg --dearmor | sudo tee /usr/share/keyrings/signal-desktop-keyring.gpg > /dev/null
echo 'deb [arch=amd64 signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/signal-desktop-keyring.gpg] https://updates.signal.org/desktop/apt xenial main' | \
sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/signal-xenial.list
sudo apt update && sudo apt install signal-desktop
Other Install Methods
Signal Desktop is also available as a Flatpak on Flathub and as a Snap package (sudo snap install signal-desktop) for distributions outside the Debian/Ubuntu family.
Linking a Device
On first launch, Signal Desktop displays a QR code that’s scanned from the Signal mobile app’s device-linking screen. No separate account creation is needed, the desktop app is always tied to an existing phone number registered on mobile.
Verify Your Download
The APT repository’s GPG signature is verified automatically during package installation; manual signature details are documented at signal.org/download/linux.
