Vikunja: Self-Hosted Task and Project Management

Vikunja is a task manager that scales from a personal to-do list to team project tracking without changing tools.

Multiple views over the same tasks

The same project can be viewed as a list, a kanban board, a table, or a Gantt chart. That flexibility matters because different work suits different views: a shopping list wants a list, a software release wants a board, and anything with dependencies wants a timeline. Switching view does not mean restructuring the data.

Features

Nested projects, subtasks, labels, priorities, due dates and reminders, recurring tasks, attachments, and assignees with sharing by team or link. There is a REST API, a CalDAV interface so tasks appear in standard calendar clients, and mobile applications.

Why self-host a task manager

Todoist, Things, and Asana all hold what is effectively a map of your life or your team’s work, and all charge per seat indefinitely. Vikunja removes both concerns. Being able to keep task data in the same backup as everything else you run is a practical bonus.

Deployment

A Go binary plus a small frontend, backed by SQLite, MySQL, or PostgreSQL. It is light enough for a Raspberry Pi and deploys cleanly as a single container.

Alternatives

Kanboard is board-first and extremely lightweight. Wekan is a closer Trello clone. Plane and Leantime target software project management specifically. Tasks.md stores everything as markdown files if you want plain text underneath.
