YunoHost: Self-Hosting Distribution With an App Catalogue

YunoHost is a Debian-based distribution built around a single goal: making it realistic for a non-specialist to run their own server.

Why self-host YunoHost

Most self-hosting effort is not the applications, it is the surrounding infrastructure: a mail server that is not blacklisted, TLS certificates that renew, DNS that resolves, backups that run, and one set of user accounts across every service. YunoHost handles that layer as part of the system, so installing an app also wires it into single sign-on, the reverse proxy, and the backup system automatically.

What it does

YunoHost falls into the Home Server category of self-hosted software. It provides centralized user management with LDAP and single sign-on across installed apps, a full mail stack with Postfix and Dovecot, automatic Let’s Encrypt certificates, an nginx reverse proxy, a firewall, backup and restore tooling, and a catalogue of several hundred packaged applications installable in a few clicks. Diagnosis tooling checks DNS, ports, and mail reputation and tells you what is misconfigured.

Community traction

YunoHost has been developed since 2012 and maintains one of the largest curated application catalogues in self-hosting, with an active multilingual community and a strong presence in privacy and decentralization circles.

Deployment

YunoHost installs as a distribution on a dedicated machine, VPS, or Raspberry Pi, either from its own ISO or by converting an existing Debian install. It expects to own the server, which is the tradeoff for how much it automates.

Alternatives

CasaOS and Umbrel are lighter, install alongside an existing system, and focus on Docker apps rather than integrated identity and mail. Mail-in-a-Box covers the mail portion alone with similar automation.

License

YunoHost is released under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0.

YunoHost is the strongest option if you want your own mail and identity infrastructure without becoming a full-time mail administrator.
