Mox: A Modern, Low-Maintenance Mail Server in a Single Go Binary
Mox is a complete mail server in one Go program, designed for low-maintenance self-hosted email. Where traditional setups glue together Postfix, Dovecot, a spam filter, DKIM signing, and certificates, Mox does it all, and its quickstart generates the configuration and tells you exactly which DNS records to publish.
Features
- SMTP for sending and receiving, and IMAP for mail clients
- Webmail in the browser
- Email authentication handled for you: SPF, DKIM signing, DMARC, MTA-STS, TLS reporting, and DANE
- Automatic TLS via ACME (Let’s Encrypt)
- Junk filtering with Bayesian learning and sender reputation
- An admin web interface for domains and accounts, with DNS record guidance
- A built-in web server that can serve static sites and reverse-proxy
Quickstart
./mox quickstart you@example.com
This creates the configuration, an admin password, and the full list of DNS records (MX, SPF, DKIM, DMARC, MTA-STS, and more) to add at your DNS provider. Binaries are published for Linux and other platforms, or build it with a recent Go toolchain. Run it as a systemd service.
Deliverability still applies
Mox removes much of the configuration burden, but it cannot fix an IP address with a bad reputation or missing reverse DNS, and some providers block mail from residential and certain cloud IP ranges. Read why self-hosted email is hard and check your server’s IP before committing. Our DNS guide covers the record types.
