SnappyMail: A Fast, Modern Webmail Client Forked From RainLoop
SnappyMail is a webmail client: it connects to any IMAP and SMTP server and gives you email in the browser. It began as a fork of RainLoop, which stopped being maintained, and has been modernised for speed, privacy, and security.
Features
- Fast and lightweight, with a modern interface and dark mode
- No database required: settings are stored in files
- Multiple accounts and identities
- Sieve filter editor for server-side mail rules
- OpenPGP encryption with OpenPGP.js, plus GnuPG and Mailvelope support
- Privacy-focused: social integrations and tracking removed
- A Nextcloud app for webmail inside Nextcloud
Deployment
SnappyMail needs PHP 7.4 or newer with the mbstring extension, on any web server; Docker images are also available. Download the release, place it on your web server, then visit the admin panel to configure your mail server’s IMAP and SMTP details. Change the default admin password and protect the data directory from web access, as the documentation describes.
It does not provide mail hosting itself; pair it with a mail server such as docker-mailserver, Mox, Mailcow, or Stalwart, or any provider that offers IMAP.
SnappyMail or Roundcube?
Roundcube is the most widely deployed open source webmail, with a large plugin ecosystem and a more traditional interface. SnappyMail is lighter, faster, and needs no database. Both are solid choices.
