Snipe-IT: Open Source IT Asset Management

Snipe-IT is an established open-source IT asset management system for tracking physical hardware and software licenses.

What it tracks

Assets with serial numbers, purchase dates, warranty expiry, and current holder; software licenses with seat counts and assignments; accessories and consumables with stock levels. Assets check out to users or locations, and every movement is recorded, which is the audit trail that makes the system worth maintaining.

Who actually needs this

Organizations issuing laptops and phones to staff, schools managing device fleets, and anyone who has tried to answer “who has that machine and when does its warranty end” from a spreadsheet. It is genuine business software rather than a homelab toy, and it is deployed widely in small and mid-sized organizations.

Deployment

A PHP and MySQL application with official Docker images. It expects a real database and benefits from being behind a proper reverse proxy with HTTPS, since it holds asset and staff records.

GLPI covers asset management alongside a help desk and broader ITSM features, which is either an advantage or unnecessary weight depending on your requirements.
