ERPNext: Open Source ERP for Accounting, Inventory, and Manufacturing

ERPNext is one of the most complete open source ERP systems: a single application to run a business’s accounting, sales, purchasing, stock, manufacturing, and more. It is a genuine alternative to commercial ERP suites for small and mid-sized companies.

Modules

  • Accounting: chart of accounts, invoicing, payments, taxes, and financial reports
  • Selling and buying: quotations, sales and purchase orders, and a CRM
  • Inventory: warehouses, stock movements, batches, and serial numbers
  • Manufacturing: bills of materials, work orders, and production planning
  • Assets, projects with timesheets, and support tickets
  • HR and payroll through the separate Frappe HR app

Everything shares one database, so a sales order flows through to stock, invoicing, and accounting without re-entry.

Built on Frappe

ERPNext runs on the Frappe framework (Python and JavaScript) with MariaDB. Frappe makes it highly customisable: custom fields, forms, reports, workflows, and scripts can be added through the interface, and whole apps can be built on the same framework.

Deployment

Self-host with frappe_docker, the official Docker Compose setup, or use the bench CLI for development. Frappe Cloud is the official managed hosting. ERPNext is a substantial application with several services (web, workers, scheduler, Redis, MariaDB); plan for a dedicated VM with several gigabytes of RAM, and good backups, since it will hold your business’s financial records.

Is it right for you?

ERP systems are powerful but involve real setup: chart of accounts, tax rules, item master, and workflows. For freelancers and very small businesses, Akaunting or Invoice Ninja are far simpler. For a manufacturing or trading business that needs inventory and accounting tied together, ERPNext is one of the strongest open source options, alongside Odoo.
