Karakeep (formerly Hoarder): Bookmark Everything With AI Tagging
Karakeep is a self-hosted bookmarking application that saves links, notes, images, and PDFs, then tags and indexes them automatically so you can actually find things again.
A note on the name
This project was previously called Hoarder and was renamed Karakeep in 2025. Same project, same maintainers; only the name and repository location changed. If you are following an older tutorial that references Hoarder or the hoarder-app repository, it is describing this software.
Why self-host Karakeep
Bookmarking services have a habit of shutting down, going paid, or quietly rotting, taking years of saved links with them. Karakeep keeps the archive on your own storage, and because it fetches and stores full page content rather than just a URL, your saved pages survive the original going offline.
What it does
Karakeep falls into the Bookmarks and Reading category of self-hosted software. It saves links with full-page archival, plain notes, images, and PDFs into one searchable collection. An optional AI layer, backed by either OpenAI or a local Ollama instance, generates tags automatically, which is the difference between a bookmark pile and something navigable. Full-text search covers archived content, not just titles, and there are browser extensions plus iOS and Android apps for saving on the move.
Deployment
Docker Compose is the standard deployment, running the web application alongside a headless Chrome instance for page archiving and Meilisearch for full-text search. Pointing the AI tagging at a local Ollama model keeps the entire pipeline self-contained, with no external API calls.
Alternatives
Linkwarden is the closest comparison, with similar archival and collection features. Readeck and Wallabag focus on read-later article extraction rather than general bookmarking. Shiori and Shaarli are lighter, simpler bookmark managers without the AI layer.
Maturity
The project is under active development with frequent releases, and the rename to Karakeep has been fully propagated across the repository, documentation, and container images.
License
Karakeep is released under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0.
Links
Karakeep is the strongest option if you want a bookmark archive that stays searchable years later without depending on a service that may not be there.
