Odoo: Open-Source ERP and Business Suite
Odoo is a full business management suite: dozens of interlocking applications covering sales, accounting, inventory, manufacturing, HR, and e-commerce, sharing one database and interface.
Why self-host Odoo
ERP data is the most sensitive data a business holds, and ERP vendors price per user per module, per month, indefinitely. The Odoo Community Edition is open source and self-hostable with no licence fee, which changes the economics substantially for small businesses. Self-hosting also means your accounting and customer records stay on infrastructure you control, and you can modify modules to match how you actually work.
What it does
Odoo falls into the Business Applications category of self-hosted software. Core modules cover CRM and sales pipelines, quotations and invoicing, double-entry accounting, inventory and warehouse management, purchasing, manufacturing with bills of materials, project management and timesheets, HR and recruitment, a website and e-commerce builder, and point of sale. Modules share data, so a sales order flows into inventory, invoicing, and accounting without integration work. A large third-party app store extends it further.
Community traction
Odoo has been developed since 2005 and is one of the most widely deployed open-source ERP platforms, with a substantial partner ecosystem and thousands of community modules.
Deployment
Official Docker images and Debian packages are published; it is a Python application backed by PostgreSQL. Resource requirements scale with the modules you enable and the size of your database.
Community vs Enterprise
This is the important caveat. The Community Edition is genuinely open source and capable, but a number of features are Enterprise-only, including full accounting in some jurisdictions, studio customization, and various advanced module features. Evaluate against the Community feature list specifically rather than Odoo’s general marketing, or you will discover the gap after migration.
License
Odoo Community Edition is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License v3.0.
