BookLore: A Self-Hosted Library for E-Books and Comics

BookLore: A Self-Hosted Library for E-Books and Comics

BookLore is a modern web library for your e-books and comics. It organises collections into libraries and shelves, fetches metadata and covers automatically, and includes a reader in the browser, with sync to e-readers.

Status: BookLore has entered maintenance mode. The maintainers say it will continue to receive occasional maintenance, bug fixes, and security updates, but major new development is not expected. Keep that in mind if you are choosing a long-term library manager.

Features

  • Libraries and smart shelves, including rule-based shelves that fill automatically
  • Metadata fetched from sources such as Google Books, Goodreads, Amazon, and Hardcover
  • BookDrop: drop files into a watched folder and they are imported with metadata
  • A built-in reader for EPUB, PDF, and comics (CBZ/CBR)
  • Kobo and KOReader sync for reading progress
  • OPDS catalogue for reader apps
  • Multiple users, each with their own shelves and progress, and permission controls

Deployment

BookLore is a Java (Spring Boot) and Angular application with MariaDB, deployed with Docker Compose. Mount your book folders and a BookDrop folder as volumes.

Alternatives

  • Calibre-Web: a web interface on top of an existing Calibre library; very mature
  • Kavita: fast reader for manga, comics, and books, actively developed
  • Komga: comics and manga server with OPDS
  • Audiobookshelf: audiobooks and podcasts, with e-book support

Given BookLore’s maintenance status, Kavita and Calibre-Web are the safer choices for a new long-term setup. Our Calibre download page covers managing the library itself.
