Directus: Headless CMS for Any SQL Database

Directus is a self-hosted headless CMS. An instant REST and GraphQL API plus a full admin app layered on top of any existing SQL database, no schema migration required.

Why self-host Directus

Most headless CMS platforms want to own your data model and force you to build around their schema. Directus takes the opposite approach: point it at an existing SQL database, and it introspects the schema and generates a full admin interface and API on top, without requiring you to migrate data into a proprietary format first.

What it does

Directus falls into the Headless CMS category of self-hosted software. It wraps a PostgreSQL, MySQL, or SQLite database (among others) with a REST and GraphQL API, a permissions and role system, and a customizable admin app for non-technical users to manage content, all generated automatically from the underlying database structure rather than a separate content model you have to define twice.

Community traction

The project has around 36.5k stars on GitHub and is widely used both for traditional content management and as a general-purpose admin layer over application databases that were not originally built with a CMS in mind.

Deployment

Docker is the standard deployment path, with an official image and compose examples covering the common database backends. A single container can be pointed at an existing database with minimal configuration to get a working admin interface.

Licensing note

Directus moved from a source-available Business Source License to its current Monospace Software Commercial License (MSCL); code released under it converts to GPL-3 after three years. The self-hosted Core tier remains free for individuals and organizations under $5M in annual revenue and 50 employees, but is capped at 3 user seats, 25 collections, and 5 automation flows, worth checking against your intended use before committing to a larger deployment.

Alternatives

If Directus does not fit your needs, common alternatives include Strapi and Payload, both of which take a more traditional approach of owning the schema rather than layering onto an existing database.

Maturity

The current release is v12.1.1. The project is mature and widely deployed in production, with a large plugin and extension ecosystem.

License

It is licensed under the Monospace Software Commercial License (MSCL), free for individuals and smaller organizations under the terms above, with a paid tier for larger deployments.

Directus is worth a look specifically if you already have a SQL database and want an admin interface and API on top of it without redesigning your data model around a CMS.
