Open WebUI: Self-Hosted AI Chat Interface

Open WebUI: Self-Hosted AI Chat Interface

Open WebUI is a self-hosted AI tool. A polished, self-hosted chat interface for Ollama and OpenAI-compatible APIs, with multi-user support and RAG built in.

Why self-host Open WebUI

A local LLM runtime like Ollama gives you an API, not a place to actually chat. Open WebUI fills that gap with a ChatGPT-style interface running entirely on your own infrastructure: conversation history, multiple user accounts, document upload for retrieval-augmented generation, and model switching, all without sending anything to a third-party chat product.

What it does

Open WebUI falls into the AI / Chat Interface category of self-hosted software. It connects to one or more backends, most commonly a local Ollama instance or any OpenAI-compatible API endpoint, and layers a full chat application on top: conversation history, prompt templates, document and image upload for RAG-style workflows, and per-user access control for households or small teams sharing one server.

Community traction

The project has 148k stars on GitHub, making it the default pairing for anyone running Ollama and wanting a proper interface rather than the bare command line or API.

Deployment

Docker is the standard and recommended deployment path, with an official image that can run alongside an Ollama container or point at an external Ollama instance on the same network.

Licensing note

Open WebUI is BSD-3-Clause based but adds a branding-protection clause as of v0.6.6 (April 2025): self-hosted deployments must keep the Open WebUI name and logo visible unless they stay under 50 end users in any 30-day period, or hold an enterprise license. For a typical home or small-team deployment this rarely matters in practice, but it is worth knowing before rebranding an internal deployment.

Alternatives

If Open WebUI does not fit your needs, common alternatives include LibreChat and AnythingLLM, both of which cover similar ground with different feature emphases around document handling and multi-model workflows.

Maturity

The project ships updates frequently, with active development tracking new model capabilities and provider integrations as they appear.

License

It is licensed under a BSD-3-Clause-based license with an added branding clause (the “Open WebUI License”), making it freely usable for personal and most commercial deployments under the terms above.

Open WebUI is worth a look if you already run Ollama and want a real interface on top of it, or if you want one shared chat front end for multiple AI backends across a household or small team.
