OpenTofu 1.13 Reduces 'Known After Apply' Noise and Adds Experimental Linting
OpenTofu 1.13 was released on September 30. OpenTofu is the community fork of Terraform, created under the Linux Foundation after HashiCorp moved Terraform to a source-available license in 2023, and it remains MPL-licensed.
Clearer plans
The most practically useful change: new convert and assume… functions designed to reduce how many values show up as (known after apply) in tofu plan.
Anyone who has reviewed a plan knows the problem: a wall of attributes the tool cannot predict until resources exist, which makes it hard to see what will actually change. Resolving more of them at plan time makes review faster and safer.
Experimental features
- Built-in linting, with a small initial rule set the project plans to expand into configuration and policy checks
- Symbol libraries: share reusable values, functions, and type definitions between configurations, separate from modules, which describe infrastructure resources
Platform changes
- Official Windows ARM64 builds, though providers must publish compatible builds too
- This is the last release series with official 32-bit 386 and ARM builds
- macOS 13 Ventura or newer is required
Removed: WinRM
WinRM support is gone from the remote-exec and file provisioners, after deprecation in 1.12. The recommended replacement is OpenSSH for Windows. If your configurations still provision Windows hosts over WinRM, stay on 1.12 until you migrate.
Getting started
OpenTofu is a drop-in replacement for most Terraform configurations: tofu init, tofu plan, and tofu apply mirror the Terraform commands. Our Terraform basics guide applies to both.
