About Neocities
Neocities exists to bring back the personal homepage. It is a deliberate homage to GeoCities, with an editor in the browser, a directory of member sites, and a culture that encourages hand-written HTML over frameworks.
It is not trying to compete with Netlify, and evaluating it on those terms misses the point. There are no build pipelines, no serverless functions, and no CI integration. There is a text editor, a file list, and a live site.
The community aspect is real. Sites are browsable, there is a follow system, and people find each other’s pages. That is a different model from hosting a site nobody discovers unless you tell them.
Pricing
The free tier gives 1GB of storage and 200GB of monthly bandwidth, with a username.neocities.org subdomain. Supporter is around $5/month and raises that to 50GB and 3TB, adds custom domain support with HTTPS, and removes the file type restrictions.
Free accounts are limited to a whitelist of file types, static web formats essentially, which prevents the service becoming general file storage.
Service Details
You can edit in the browser, upload files, or use the API and the neocities CLI to push a directory from your machine. That last option means a static site generator still works: build locally, sync the output.
Everything is served over HTTPS. Custom domains require the paid tier.
The organisation has been running since 2013, is funded by supporters rather than advertising, and publishes its finances. It has also taken public positions on web preservation, including archiving the sites it hosts.
If you want to write HTML by hand and have someone stumble across it, this is the host built for exactly that. If you want a deployment pipeline, look at Codeberg Pages or GitHub Pages.
