About GitHub Pages
GitHub Pages serves static files from a repository. Push to a branch, and the content appears at username.github.io or a domain you point at it. For documentation, project sites, and personal blogs it is the path of least resistance, and it costs nothing.
Publishing from a public repository is free. Publishing from a private repository requires a paid GitHub plan, which catches people out when they try to keep their source closed.
Pricing
Free for public repositories. Private repository publishing needs GitHub Pro at around $4/month or a Team plan. There are soft limits: roughly 1GB of published content, 100GB of bandwidth per month, and 10 builds per hour. These are enforced by a human getting in touch rather than a hard cutoff, but they are real.
Commercial use is permitted, though the terms exclude running a storefront or a service, so it is not the place for a SaaS product’s application.
Service Details
Jekyll builds run server-side without configuration, which is why so many documentation sites use it. For anything else, build in GitHub Actions and deploy the output, which is now the standard approach and lets you use Astro, Hugo, Eleventy, or whatever you prefer.
Custom domains work with a CNAME, and HTTPS via Let’s Encrypt is automatic once DNS resolves. There is no server-side execution at all: no PHP, no databases, no serverless functions. If you need any of that, Cloudflare Pages or Netlify add functions on top of the same static model.
Deployment from a Linux machine is just git push, which makes it a natural fit for the workflow in our Git basics guide.
