About Codeberg Pages

Codeberg is a non-profit German association running Forgejo, the community fork of Gitea, as a public code forge. Codeberg Pages is its static hosting layer: push to a pages branch, and the content is served at username.codeberg.page.

The appeal is who is not involved. No advertising, no analytics on your visitors, no venture capital, no acquisition risk. The organisation is funded by donations and membership fees and is legally structured as an eingetragener Verein, which is about as far from a growth-stage startup as hosting gets.

For free software projects that would rather not host on infrastructure owned by Microsoft, this is the obvious alternative.

Pricing

Free. There is no paid tier. Codeberg asks that you keep usage reasonable and, if the service is useful to you, that you donate or become a member. Membership is around €24/year.

Resources are shared and finite, so it is not the place for a high-traffic commercial site. Content must also be free software or open content, in line with the platform’s terms.

Service Details

Publishing is deliberately simple: put your built site in a repository branch and it is served. You can also serve from a repository named pages. Custom domains work with a .domains file in the repository plus the matching DNS record, and certificates are issued automatically.

There is no server-side build step. Build locally or in Forgejo Actions, which is Codeberg’s CI, and commit the output. That is a little more manual than Netlify but entirely predictable, and the whole release is a git push.

Everything runs on free software, which for many of the people this site is written for is the entire point. Our Git basics guide covers the push workflow.
