About GitLab Pages

GitLab Pages publishes whatever your CI pipeline puts in a public/ directory. There is no privileged build system and no favoured framework: you write a .gitlab-ci.yml job, it runs in a container, and the artifact becomes the site.

That design makes it more flexible than GitHub Pages, which special-cases Jekyll. It also means nothing happens until you write the pipeline file, so the first deploy takes slightly longer.

Two things distinguish it. Private projects can publish Pages sites on the free tier, with access control tying site visibility to project membership. And because GitLab is open source, the same feature works on a self-managed instance you run yourself.

Pricing

Free on gitlab.com, including private projects, with 400 CI minutes per month on the free tier, which is the actual constraint since every deploy consumes them. Paid tiers start around $29 per user per month and raise that allowance considerably.

Self-managed GitLab Community Edition costs nothing beyond the server you run it on, and Pages is included.

Service Details

Any static site generator works, because you are just running commands in a CI container. Astro, Hugo, Eleventy, Zola, mdBook, Sphinx, all fine. Custom domains and Let’s Encrypt certificates are supported, with a manual DNS verification step.

Access control is the standout feature. Setting a project to private makes the published site require a GitLab login, which is a clean way to host internal documentation without building an auth layer.

Self-hosting the whole stack appeals if you want your source, CI, and published site on your own hardware. Our self-hosting introduction covers the wider case for that, honestly including the costs.

Available in: Global on gitlab.com, or wherever you run a self-managed instance
