LobeChat: A Polished Chat Interface With a Plugin Ecosystem
LobeChat is a chat interface that prioritises the interface. Where most self-hosted front-ends are functional, LobeChat is closer to a commercial product in feel, which matters if other people are going to use it.
Providers
It connects to OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Groq, and others, and to local models through Ollama or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint such as LocalAI.
Switching providers mid-conversation works, which is useful when a smaller local model is fine until the question gets harder.
Assistants and plugins
The assistant marketplace provides preconfigured personas with system prompts and settings for specific tasks. The plugin system extends the model with tools: web search, code execution, and API calls.
Both are the sort of feature that looks like decoration and turns out to be what makes a tool get used, because it removes the step of writing a system prompt every time.
Multimodal
Image input for models that support vision, voice input and output, and text to image generation are built in rather than bolted on.
Deployment
It deploys as a Docker container or to platforms like Vercel. The container version with a database gives you multi-user support and server-side conversation storage.
The lighter deployment stores conversations in the browser, which is simpler and means your history lives on one device.
Put it behind authentication if it is reachable from outside your network. Our reverse proxy builder generates the config.
Choosing between front-ends
Open WebUI is the simplest if you are running Ollama and want a good interface with no fuss.
LibreChat is the strongest for multi-user households and teams, with per-user budgets.
LobeChat is the most polished and has the best plugin story.
All three do the same core job. The differences are in management features and taste.
