Lyrion Music Server: The Community Continuation of Logitech Media Server

Lyrion Music Server: The Community Continuation of Logitech Media Server

Lyrion Music Server (LMS) is the server that powers Squeezebox players. It has had many names: SlimServer, SqueezeCenter, Squeezebox Server, and Logitech Media Server. After Logitech stepped back, the community took over development, and it is now Lyrion Music Server, actively maintained by the LMS Community.

Despite its age, it remains one of the best multi-room music systems you can self-host, with a dedicated following among audio enthusiasts.

Features

  • Streams your local music library, with rich browsing by artist, album, genre, and year
  • Internet radio and podcasts
  • Music services through plugins
  • Synchronised multi-room playback across players
  • A large ecosystem of plugins for features and integrations
  • Written in Perl, running on Linux, macOS, and Windows

Players

  • Original Squeezebox hardware (Squeezebox 3, Boom, Radio, Touch, Receiver, Transporter), still widely used and available second-hand
  • Squeezelite, a software player that turns any Linux box or Raspberry Pi into a Squeezebox, popular for DIY networked speakers and DACs
  • Phone and desktop controller apps such as Material Skin (a modern web UI plugin), iPeng, and Squeezer

The Raspberry Pi plus Squeezelite combination, with a good DAC, is a common way to build affordable multi-room audio.

Deployment

Official Docker images are available as lmscommunity/lyrionmusicserver on Docker Hub and on GitHub Container Registry, and native packages exist for major distributions. Mount your music library read-only, and use host networking so players can discover the server on your LAN.

Alternatives

  • Music Assistant: modern multi-room music, tightly integrated with Home Assistant, and it can drive Squeezebox players too
  • Navidrome: a Subsonic-compatible server for streaming to phones and desktop apps
