KDE Plasma 6.8 Cuts Panel Auto-Hide Delay From 500ms to 50ms

KDE developers have shortened the delay before an auto-hidden panel hides after the pointer leaves it, from 500 milliseconds down to 50. Plasma 6.8 is scheduled for release on October 14, 2026.

Why half a second felt broken

A tenfold reduction in a timeout is not usually news. This one is, because 500 milliseconds sits in exactly the wrong range for human perception.

Anything under about 100ms reads as instantaneous. Anything over about a second reads as a deliberate delay you can plan around. Half a second is the uncomfortable middle: long enough to notice, short enough that you cannot predict it, so the panel feels like it is lagging behind your intent rather than responding to it.

Users of auto-hide panels have complained about this feeling sluggish for years without necessarily being able to say why. This is why.

At 50ms the panel will read as immediate. The tradeoff is that a brief pointer excursion off the panel will now hide it, which is presumably why the original value was conservative, but 500ms was overcorrecting for a rare case at the expense of every normal interaction.

Also coming in 6.8

  • Multilingual search in System Settings, so you can find a setting by its name in another language you know
  • KWin stability improvements
  • Automatic window shadows
  • CPU affinity controls, a long-requested feature

The multilingual search is a genuinely thoughtful addition for anyone who learned a desktop in one language and now runs it in another, which describes a large number of people.

Plasma’s cadence

Plasma 6.8 arrives in October, following 6.6 becoming a three-year LTS under the Bulletproof KDE initiative. That split is worth understanding when choosing a version: 6.6 is the one to run if you want stability guarantees, and the 6.7 and 6.8 line is where the improvements land first.

Applications ship separately, and KDE Gear 26.08 arrived this month independently of any of this.
