Ardour 9.8 Adds Keys and Scales, and Limits Crash Data Loss to About Five Seconds
Ardour 9.8 was released on August 23, adding initial support for musical keys and scales along with a recovery improvement that matters more than any feature.
Recordings survive crashes now
Audio recordings can be recovered more reliably if the system crashes while Ardour is recording, with data loss limited to about five seconds.
For anyone who records live performance, this is the headline and everything else is secondary. A crash during a take used to mean losing the take, and a lost take is not a bug report, it is a performance that will not happen the same way twice. Bounding the loss to five seconds converts a catastrophe into an annoyance.
Keys and scales
Ardour can now visualize notes falling outside a selected scale, and optionally prevent you from creating them while composing or improvising in a specific key.
This is standard in commercial DAWs and has been a real gap. It is most useful for people who are not fluent theorists: being shown that a note is outside the key you are working in, before you commit to it, is a genuine compositional aid rather than a constraint.
The optional enforcement is the right design. Being prevented from playing an out-of-scale note would be an absurd restriction for anyone who knows what they are doing, so making it a toggle rather than a mode is correct.
Clip recording
Clip recording received enhancements alongside the usual body of fixes. Ardour’s clip and loop workflow has been developing steadily over the last several releases as the project builds out non-linear composition alongside its traditional linear timeline.
Why Ardour matters
Professional audio on Linux has a small number of serious options, and Ardour is the most complete of them. It is a full DAW rather than a simplified alternative, it has been in development for over two decades, and it is one of the reasons a Linux audio workstation is a viable proposition rather than a compromise.
The project funds development partly through paid downloads of prebuilt binaries while remaining fully open source, which is a sustainable model more projects could learn from.
