About Surge

Surge is the most direct static host there is. Install the CLI, run surge in a directory, and the contents are live. Account creation happens inline the first time, with an email and a password typed into the same prompt.

npm install -g surge
cd dist && surge

That is the whole product. No dashboard to learn, no repository to connect, no build configuration. For publishing a quick demo, sharing a static prototype, or deploying from a script, the lack of ceremony is genuinely valuable.

It has been running since 2014 and is maintained by a small team, which is worth weighing: it is stable and unhurried rather than actively adding features.

Pricing

Free covers unlimited sites, custom domains, and HTTPS on *.surge.sh subdomains. Professional is around $30/month and adds SSL for your own custom domains, redirect rules, password protection, and basic analytics.

The free tier’s custom-domain-without-HTTPS limitation is the main thing that pushes people to pay or to look elsewhere, since serving a real domain over plain HTTP is not acceptable in 2026.

Service Details

Deployment is a directory upload. A CNAME file sets the domain and a 200.html file makes it a single-page application with client-side routing. That is close to the entire configuration surface.

There is no build step, no serverless functions, no server-side anything. You build locally or in CI and push the output. Because it is a single command, wiring it into a Makefile or a GitHub Actions job takes one line.

For a Linux user who lives in the terminal, this is arguably the lowest-friction way to get a static file onto the public internet. For a production site with a custom domain, Cloudflare Pages or Netlify give you more for free.
