About Deno Deploy
Deno Deploy runs JavaScript and TypeScript at the edge, in V8 isolates rather than containers. Cold starts are effectively nil because there is no container to start, only an isolate to instantiate, which is the same architectural trick Cloudflare Workers uses.
TypeScript runs natively with no build step, which is the most immediately pleasant thing about it. Write a .ts file, deploy it, done.
It also hosts static assets, so a full-stack Fresh or Astro site with server rendering deploys as one unit rather than needing a separate static host and API.
Pricing
The free tier covers 1 million requests and 100GB of outbound data per month, which is more than most side projects will ever use. Pro is around $20/month with 5 million requests and 500GB, then usage-based beyond that.
Deno KV, the built-in globally replicated key-value store, has its own read and write unit pricing. For simple state it removes the need for an external database entirely.
Service Details
Deployment is from a GitHub repository, with a preview URL per branch, or via deployctl from the command line. The runtime targets web standards: fetch, Request, Response, and Web Crypto rather than Node-specific APIs, though there is substantial Node compatibility for npm packages.
Constraints are the usual edge ones. No filesystem writes, no long-running processes, no raw TCP sockets, and CPU time per request is bounded. A background job or a WebSocket server that holds thousands of connections belongs on a VPS instead.
The whole platform is built by the Deno company, and the runtime itself is open source and MIT licensed, so a self-hosted fallback exists if you ever need one.
