Guest Additions are the drivers and services you install inside a VirtualBox virtual machine. Version 7.2.18 matches VirtualBox 7.2.18, released September 15, 2026.
What they provide
- Display resizing: the guest resolution follows the window size
- Shared folders between host and guest
- Shared clipboard and drag and drop
- 3D acceleration through the VMSVGA graphics adapter
- Time synchronisation and better mouse integration
Keep the Guest Additions version matched to the host VirtualBox version. Mismatches are the most common cause of broken shared folders and clipboards after a host upgrade.
Installing in a Linux guest
The host’s VirtualBox usually includes the ISO already. From the VM window, choose Devices > Insert Guest Additions CD image, then inside the guest:
# prerequisites for building the kernel modules
sudo apt install build-essential dkms linux-headers-$(uname -r) # Debian / Ubuntu
sudo dnf install gcc make perl kernel-devel kernel-headers dkms # Fedora
sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt
sudo /mnt/VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
sudo reboot
Many distributions also package the guest side (virtualbox-guest-utils or similar), which updates with the guest system and can be easier to maintain.
Shared folder access
Shared folders are mounted with the vboxsf group. Add your user to it:
sudo usermod -aG vboxsf "$USER"
