VirtualBox 7.2.18 was released on September 15, 2026. We covered it in the news.
The VDI fix
VDI is VirtualBox’s native virtual disk format, and this release fixes a corruption bug in it. Disk image corruption means guest data at risk, which puts this above a routine point release. Update, and check that backups of important VMs actually restore; our backup guide covers that.
Linux 7.3 support ahead of time
VirtualBox’s host kernel modules use internal kernel interfaces that have no stability guarantee, so new kernels regularly break them. 7.2.18 adds support for Linux 7.3 before it ships, so the modules will build on day one rather than weeks later. It also adds RHEL 10.3 host support.
Other fixes
- 3D acceleration crashes
- Windows 11 on ARM guest issues
Installing
Prefer the Oracle repository or the .deb/.rpm for your distribution from the download page over distro packages, which often lag. After a kernel update, the modules rebuild through DKMS:
dkms status | grep vbox
sudo /sbin/vboxconfig
With Secure Boot enabled, the modules must be signed before they load; our Secure Boot explainer covers enrolling a key. Update the matching Guest Additions 7.2.18 inside your VMs too.
If you do not need VirtualBox specifically, KVM with virt-manager is built into Linux and avoids the out-of-tree module problem entirely.
