tmux 3.7b
A terminal multiplexer that keeps shell sessions alive across disconnects and splits one terminal into multiple panes and windows, essential for working on remote servers over SSH.

tmux solves a problem every remote administrator hits: an SSH connection drops and takes a running job with it. Start work inside a tmux session and the session lives on the server, surviving disconnects entirely. Reattach later, from anywhere, and everything is exactly where you left it.
The two things it does
Session persistence is the one that saves you. Detach with Ctrl+b d, close the laptop, reattach tomorrow with tmux attach, and the long-running build or migration is still going. The second feature is layout: split a terminal into panes and windows so logs, an editor, and a shell share one screen without a tabbed terminal emulator.
tmux new -s work # start a named session
tmux ls # list sessions
tmux attach -t work # reattach
What’s in 3.7
The 3.7 series added a new-pane command, a copy-mode-line-numbers option, and focus-follows-mouse behavior. 3.7a and 3.7b are maintenance releases carrying stability, correctness, and redraw fixes.
Building from source
tar xzf tmux-3.7b.tar.gz
cd tmux-3.7b
./configure && make
sudo make install
Building needs libevent and ncurses development headers. Most people should install the distribution package instead (apt install tmux, dnf install tmux, pacman -S tmux); the source tarball matters when your distribution ships an older release and you want current features, and static builds are published for machines where you cannot install build dependencies.
tmux vs screen
GNU screen does the same core job and is often preinstalled. tmux has a cleaner configuration format, better split-pane handling, and active development. If you are learning one today, learn tmux.
