Neovim started as a fork of Vim aimed at modernizing the codebase, and became the default choice for people who want modal editing with contemporary tooling. Your Vim muscle memory transfers unchanged; what differs is everything around the editing model.
What it adds over Vim
A built-in LSP client means completion, go-to-definition, diagnostics, and rename work against the same language servers that power VS Code, without a plugin bridging the gap. Configuration and plugins are written in Lua rather than Vimscript, which is both faster and considerably more pleasant. Treesitter provides real syntax trees instead of regex highlighting, and :terminal embeds a shell in a buffer.
Installing
The AppImage is self-contained and always current:
chmod +x nvim-linux-x86_64.appimage
./nvim-linux-x86_64.appimage
Distribution packages exist everywhere (apt install neovim, dnf install neovim, pacman -S neovim) but often trail upstream by a release or two, which matters more here than for most software because the plugin ecosystem moves quickly and many plugins require a recent Neovim.
Configuration and distributions
A bare Neovim is close to a bare Vim; the experience people describe comes from configuration. Starting from a prebuilt configuration such as LazyVim, AstroNvim, or kickstart.nvim gets you an IDE-like setup in minutes, and kickstart in particular is designed to be read and modified rather than treated as a black box.
