LibreOffice 26.8 is the August 2026 major release. We covered it in the news, along with its record download numbers and “no AI” stance.
What changed
A new paragraph composer. The composer decides where lines break, how words are spaced, and where hyphens go. The old approach was greedy, filling each line and moving on; the new one optimises across the whole paragraph, as TeX and professional typesetting software do. The result is more even spacing and fewer “rivers” of white space in justified text.
Variable fonts. A variable font holds a continuous range of weights, widths, and other axes in one file. LibreOffice now renders them correctly, so documents using modern fonts look as designed and intermediate weights are available.
Fresh or Still?
LibreOffice uses calendar versioning: 26.8 means 2026, August. There are two major releases a year, in February and August.
| Branch | Currently | For |
|---|---|---|
| Fresh | 26.8 | The newest features, such as the typography work above |
| Still | 26.2 | More accumulated fixes; the one to deploy in an office |
