Krita 5.3.3 is a bugfix release on the production-recommended 5.3 branch, built on the proven Qt 5 toolkit. A parallel 6.0.x branch is also being developed on Qt 6 with native Wayland and HDR support, but the Krita team still recommends the 5.3 series for client deliverables and studio production work until the Qt 6 branch matures further.

Why Digital Artists Use It

Krita includes a genuinely large default brush library, stabilizers for shaky-hand line work, a dedicated animation timeline with onion skinning, and native CMYK support for artists preparing print work, features that put it closer to Photoshop or Clip Studio Paint than to GIMP’s more general-purpose photo-editing focus.

Installing on Linux

The AppImage is self-contained and requires no installation:

chmod +x krita-5.3.3-x86_64.appimage
./krita-5.3.3-x86_64.appimage

Krita is also available as a Flatpak on Flathub and as a Snap package, both commonly recommended over distribution-packaged versions since Krita’s release cadence often outpaces distro repositories.

Wayland and HDR (6.0 Branch)

Artists specifically wanting native Wayland session support and HDR painting should track the 6.0.x releases instead, understanding that branch is newer and less battle-tested than 5.3.
