KeePassXC is a community-maintained fork of the original KeePassX, itself a cross-platform port of the Windows-only KeePass. Every credential lives in a single encrypted .kdbx database file stored locally, with no cloud account or server dependency required, syncing across devices is left entirely up to the user, commonly via Syncthing or a self-hosted file share.
What’s New in 2.7.12
This release adds {TIMEOTP} as an Auto-Type placeholder for inserting a current TOTP code during automatic form-filling, improves the browser extension’s access-confirmation dialog by showing matched URLs in a tooltip, adds support for nested folders when importing from Bitwarden exports, and improves how passkeys store their backup-eligibility state.
Installing on Linux
The AppImage is portable and requires no installation:
chmod +x KeePassXC-2.7.12-x86_64.AppImage
./KeePassXC-2.7.12-x86_64.AppImage
KeePassXC is also packaged natively by most major distributions and available on Flathub for a sandboxed install.
Browser Integration
The companion KeePassXC-Browser extension (for Firefox and Chromium-based browsers) connects to a running KeePassXC instance over a local encrypted channel, enabling autofill directly from the browser without copying passwords through the clipboard.
