DXVK translates Direct3D 8, 9, 10, and 11 calls into Vulkan, so Windows games can run on Linux through Wine and Proton. Version 3.1.1 is a bug fix release from September 15, 2026. We covered it in the news.
What changed
Fixes for specific games, spanning two decades:
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition (2016), still one of the most-played games on Linux thanks to modding
- Rayman 3 (2003)
- Call of Duty: Ghosts (2013)
- Painkiller (2004)
- Corpse Party
A list of individual games looks small next to a feature release, but that is what compatibility work actually is: finding each game that relied on an undocumented driver behaviour, and working around it.
Do you need to install it?
Usually not. Proton, which Steam uses to run Windows games, bundles DXVK and updates it with Proton releases. Tools like Lutris, Bottles, and Heroic also manage DXVK versions for you.
Install it manually only to add DXVK to a plain Wine prefix:
tar xf dxvk-3.1.1.tar.gz
cd dxvk-3.1.1
export WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-mygame
cp x64/*.dll "$WINEPREFIX/drive_c/windows/system32/"
cp x32/*.dll "$WINEPREFIX/drive_c/windows/syswow64/"
# then set d3d9, d3d10core, d3d11 and dxgi to native in winecfg
DXVK needs a Vulkan-capable driver, which on AMD and Intel means a current Mesa. Direct3D 12 is handled by a separate project, VKD3D-Proton. Our gaming on Linux with Proton guide explains how Wine, DXVK, VKD3D-Proton, and Proton fit together, and the latest Wine is 11.18.
