Audacity remains the go-to free tool for recording and editing audio on Linux, whether that’s cleaning up a podcast, recording voiceovers, digitizing old cassette or vinyl recordings, or basic multi-track mixing.
What’s New in 3.7.8
This is a patch release fixing several accumulated bugs: paste operations into newly created tracks, scripting and macro behavior around tone generation, waveform scale settings, clip naming, and clip-boundary commands, plus a fix for preset loading in the Distortion effect.
Running the AppImage
AppImage requires no installation or root access, just download, mark executable, and run:
chmod +x audacity-linux-3.7.8-x64.AppImage
./audacity-linux-3.7.8-x64.AppImage
This is a convenient way to run the latest Audacity version regardless of what your distribution’s repositories currently package, and works across most modern distributions without modification.
Looking Ahead: Audacity 4.0
Audacity 4 is currently in public beta, representing a significant update to the application; 3.7.8 remains the current stable release for users who want a proven, mature version rather than beta software.
