Plasma 6.6.7 Is the First Release of KDE's New Three-Year LTS Branch

Two days after Plasma 6.8 dropped the X11 session, KDE released Plasma 6.6.7 on October 16, for users who want a desktop that stays put.

Why there is a 6.6.7

Plasma 6.6.6, released in July, was announced as the last planned bugfix release of the 6.6 series. In August the Bullet-Proof KDE Initiative, backed by Kubuntu Focus and Techpaladin Software, extended Plasma 6.6 maintenance to three years. 6.6.7 is the first release under that extended schedule.

The initiative mainly targets Kubuntu 26.04 LTS. It covers Plasma 6.6, KDE Frameworks 6.24, and KDE Gear 25.12, with bug fixes and security updates.

It also gives anyone who still needs an X11 session a supported Plasma for some time to come, since 6.6 predates the Wayland-only switch.

Fixes in 6.6.7

Three months of fixes, including:

  • KWin: crashes related to screenshots and screen recording, GPU reset handling, keyboard repeat, screen locking, and display management
  • Discover: a crash when closing during background jobs
  • Desktop: Kickoff issues, dragging files onto grouped Task Manager entries, and right-to-left layouts
  • Klipper preserves PNG images when restoring clipboard history
  • The desktop portal releases screencast streams when session creation fails

Packages will reach Kubuntu and other distributions shipping 6.6 through normal updates.
