GNOME 50.5 Fixes Multi-Monitor Primary Display Bugs and Improves HDR

GNOME 50.5 arrived on September 26. GNOME 51 shipped ten days earlier, but most people on stable distributions, including Ubuntu 26.04 LTS users, will be running GNOME 50 for a long time, and this is the release that reaches them.

Multi-monitor fixes

The headline fix is for setups where more than one monitor was treated as primary, which confused panels, notifications, and where new windows appeared. Also fixed:

  • External monitor hotplug failures
  • Workspace switching can now use direct scanout, which skips a composition step and reduces latency and power use
  • Cross-GPU buffer scanout, for laptops that drive an external display from a different GPU than the one rendering

HDR improvements

  • SDR content in HDR mode looked washed out in some cases. It no longer does
  • Device color profiles no longer require EDID data, so monitors with missing or broken EDID can still be color-managed
  • All supported fallback resolutions are now listed

Other fixes

  • Windows opened through “new window” actions now appear on the correct workspace
  • Locking the screen cancels open mount password dialogs, rather than leaving them over the lock screen
  • The screen can no longer be unlocked after a time limit has expired (a parental-controls fix)
  • Screen captures work with direct scanout on systems without dma-buf support
  • Better keyboard navigation in unlock dialogs, and fixes for offscreen effect glitches when scale changes

App updates

AppVersionFix
Files (Nautilus)50.3Crash when switching default apps
GDM50.3pam_gdm regression and memory leaks
Web (Epiphany)50.6Password manager improvements
Maps50.5Secondary icon fixes

The GDM fix is worth noting if you had login problems on 50.2. Our PAM explainer covers how the login stack fits together, and display managers explained covers GDM’s role.

Point releases reach distributions over the following days to weeks. There is nothing to configure; install updates as usual.
