About Opalstack
Opalstack was founded by former WebFaction staff after that company was acquired by GoDaddy, and it rebuilt the thing WebFaction was loved for: shared hosting that treats you like a developer rather than a WordPress customer.
The defining feature is that you get a real Unix account with SSH and the ability to run persistent processes. Not a cron job, not a CGI script, an actual long-running daemon. That means Django, Rails, Node, Go binaries, and anything else you can build, running under supervisord style process management on shared infrastructure.
Almost no shared host allows that, which is why people who want it usually end up on a VPS and become responsible for the whole operating system.
Pricing
Plans start around $8/month for 10GB and 1GB of memory, around $16/month for the middle tier, and around $32/month for 60GB and 4GB.
More than budget shared hosting, considerably less than a managed VPS, and you are not administering the server. For a developer with several small applications, the economics are excellent because they all share one account’s resources.
Service Details
The control panel handles domains, SSL, databases, mail, and application creation, with each application being a process type: PHP, Node, Python WSGI, static, proxy to a port you are listening on. Nginx sits in front and routes to them.
You get SSH, a compiler toolchain, and permission to install into your home directory, so anything that does not need root works. PostgreSQL and MySQL are both available. Let’s Encrypt certificates are automatic.
Backups are taken daily and self-restorable. Support is by ticket from people who understand what you are asking.
The honest limitation: memory is capped and shared infrastructure has neighbours. A memory-hungry application belongs on a VPS. For a handful of small services, this is one of the best-value products in hosting and remains oddly little known.
Available in: New York, Los Angeles, Amsterdam
