About Nexcess
Nexcess is the managed application hosting arm of the Liquid Web group, and its distinguishing focus is ecommerce. WooCommerce and Magento are first-class products here rather than WordPress with a plugin, with the caching and database tuning that those stacks specifically need.
The feature that matters most for a store is autoscaling. Traffic spikes get additional PHP workers automatically for a limited number of days per month at no extra charge, which is exactly the behaviour you want during a sale and exactly what a fixed shared plan fails at.
They also maintain a plugin performance monitor that flags which WordPress plugins are slowing your site, which is a useful thing to have measured rather than guessed.
Pricing
WordPress plans start around $21/month for a single site with 15GB and 2TB of transfer, rising around $79/month for five sites. Magento starts around $79/month.
That is well above shared hosting and roughly in line with WP Engine. The comparison worth making is against the revenue of the store it hosts, where a few tens of dollars for autoscaling during a sale is trivially justified.
Service Details
Staging environments, automatic daily backups, free SSL, and free migrations. SSH and WP-CLI access are included, along with Git deployment, so a developer workflow is possible rather than being limited to the dashboard.
Image compression, built-in CDN, and object caching with Redis are included on the WordPress plans. PHP versions are current and selectable.
The platform runs on Liquid Web’s infrastructure with their support organisation behind it, which is 24/7 and technically competent.
Best fit: an online store where downtime and slow checkout have a direct revenue cost. Overkill for a blog, where FastComet or Rocket.net will serve for far less.
Available in: Michigan, Arizona, Amsterdam, London, Sydney
