About NearlyFreeSpeech.NET

NearlyFreeSpeech.NET has been running since 2002 on a model nobody else copied: there are no plans. You deposit money into an account and it drains as you use resources. A small site can cost pennies a month, and an idle one costs almost nothing.

The name is not decoration. The company has an explicit and long-standing position on not removing content under pressure absent a legal obligation, and it has held that line publicly on several occasions. For anyone hosting something that might attract complaints, that history is the reason to be here.

The other reason is the complete absence of sales behaviour. No upsells, no renewal price jumps, no domain registration bundled into checkout, no dashboard nagging you to upgrade.

Pricing

Roughly $0.01/day for a site, plus around $0.01 per MB per month of storage, plus bandwidth at $0.10 to $0.40/GB depending on volume for production sites. Non-production sites are not charged for bandwidth at all but are rate limited.

A small personal site frequently runs under $2/month. A busy one costs proportionally more, with no tier to jump to and no overage penalty, just the meter.

Service Details

FreeBSD underneath rather than Linux, which is worth knowing, though for PHP, Python, Perl, Ruby, and static content it makes no practical difference. You get SSH access, cron, and a real shell, which many shared hosts do not offer at any price.

MySQL is available as a separately metered process. Let’s Encrypt certificates are free and automatic. There is a proper API and a well-regarded support forum where the operators answer questions directly.

There is no control panel in the cPanel sense, no one-click WordPress, and no phone support. The documentation is excellent and assumes you can read it. This suits someone comfortable with a terminal and is a poor fit for someone who wants a wizard.

Available in: Arizona and Missouri, United States
