About Firebase Hosting

Firebase Hosting serves static files from Google’s edge network with automatic HTTPS and single-command deploys. On its own it is a competent static host; the reason people choose it is everything sitting next to it.

Firestore for the database, Firebase Authentication for logins, Cloud Functions for server-side logic, and Cloud Storage for uploads all wire together with minimal ceremony. For a mobile app that also needs a web presence, having one project cover both is a real convenience.

The corresponding cost is lock-in. Firestore’s data model and the Authentication service do not port anywhere without rewriting, so a migration later is a project rather than a config change.

Pricing

The Spark free tier gives 10GB of storage and 360MB of daily transfer, adequate for a personal site or a prototype. Blaze is pay-as-you-go with the same free quota included, then around $0.15/GB transferred.

The warning that belongs on every Firebase page: Blaze has no hard spending cap by default. A traffic spike or a misbehaving client loop bills you for it. Set a budget alert on the underlying Google Cloud project before you enable it, not after.

Service Details

Deploys go through the firebase CLI, which works fine on Linux via npm. Each deploy is versioned and you can roll back from the console instantly, which is the feature you will be grateful for at some point.

Rewrites can route paths to Cloud Functions or Cloud Run, so server-rendered frameworks work. Preview channels give a temporary URL per branch for review before merging.

Custom domains and certificates are automatic. There is no server to configure, no SSH, and no persistent filesystem, which is the standard shape of this category.

Available in: Global CDN, with functions in selectable Google Cloud regions
