About DigitalOcean App Platform
App Platform is DigitalOcean’s answer to Heroku. Connect a GitHub or GitLab repository, and it detects the language, builds with Cloud Native Buildpacks, and deploys. Alternatively supply a Dockerfile or a prebuilt image and it runs that instead.
The reason to choose it over a droplet is that you stop being responsible for the operating system. No package updates, no systemd units, no nginx configuration, no TLS renewal. The reason not to is that you also lose the control that comes with those responsibilities.
Static sites are free for the first three per account, which makes it a reasonable Netlify substitute if your dynamic services already live at DigitalOcean.
Pricing
Static sites: three free, then around $3/month each. Containerised services start around $5/month for 512MB, with the professional tier at around $29/month for a dedicated vCPU and 2GB.
Managed PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, and Spaces object storage are separate products with their own charges. A realistic small application with a database lands well above the headline service price, so budget the whole stack rather than the app line.
Service Details
Deployment triggers on push, with build logs in the console and automatic rollback if a deploy fails health checks. Supported runtimes cover Node, Python, Go, PHP, Ruby, and static output; anything else works via Docker.
Notable limits: the filesystem is ephemeral, so uploads must go to Spaces or another object store, and there is no SSH into the running container. Debugging is through logs and a console exec, which is a genuine adjustment coming from a VPS.
Functions are available for event-driven work, and everything sits behind a managed load balancer with free certificates.
Available in: Nine regions across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific
