About IBM Cloud (SoftLayer)
IBM Cloud is the successor to SoftLayer, a bare metal and cloud provider acquired by IBM in 2013. IBM Cloud provides virtual servers, bare metal servers, Kubernetes (IBM Kubernetes Service), Red Hat OpenShift, object storage (Cloud Object Storage), databases, and Watson AI services. It is an enterprise-grade platform used primarily by large businesses and those already in the IBM ecosystem.
Pricing
Virtual servers start at around $15/mo for a transient (spot-priced) 1 vCPU instance. On-demand hourly pricing is standard. Bare metal servers from ~$180/mo for entry configurations. IBM Cloud pricing is complex and best reviewed via their cost estimator, as reserved and savings plan pricing varies significantly.
Service Details
IBM Cloud features bare metal with no hypervisor overhead, SAP-certified infrastructure, a private backbone connecting all global data centers, and compliance with FedRAMP, SOC 2, ISO 27001, HIPAA, and PCI DSS. The console is detailed but complex. Strong appeal to enterprises with existing IBM software contracts, mainframe integration, or regulated industry requirements.
Available in: Dallas (TX), Washington DC, San Jose (CA), London (UK), Frankfurt (Germany), Amsterdam (Netherlands), Sydney (Australia), Tokyo (Japan), Singapore, Toronto (Canada), São Paulo (Brazil), and more
