VirtualBox Guest Additions 7.2.16
Guest Additions 7.2.16 delivers the guest side of the Wayland shared clipboard fixes, along with improved VMSVGA 3D performance, display resizing, and shared folder support.

Guest Additions are the drivers and services that run inside a VirtualBox virtual machine. Without them a Linux guest works, but poorly: no automatic display resizing, no shared clipboard, no shared folders, and software-rendered graphics.
Why this version matters
VirtualBox 7.2.16 improved shared clipboard handling under Wayland for both hosts and guests. The guest half of that fix lives here.
This is the part people miss. Upgrading VirtualBox on the host does not update the Guest Additions inside your VMs, and a version mismatch is the most common cause of “I upgraded and the clipboard still does not work.” Each VM needs its own update.
What the Guest Additions provide
- Automatic display resizing. The guest resolution follows the VM window as you drag it.
- Shared clipboard. Copy and paste between host and guest, in either or both directions.
- Shared folders. Mount a host directory inside the guest.
- Drag and drop. File transfer between host and guest.
- VMSVGA 3D acceleration. Hardware-accelerated graphics through the virtual GPU, which 7.2.16 makes faster.
- Time synchronization. Keeps guest clocks correct across host suspend.
- Seamless mode. Guest application windows rendered directly on the host desktop.
Installing in a Linux guest
The kernel modules build from source, so the guest needs a compiler and its kernel headers first.
# Debian and Ubuntu guest
sudo apt update
sudo apt install build-essential dkms linux-headers-$(uname -r)
# Fedora guest
sudo dnf install gcc make perl kernel-devel kernel-headers dkms
# Then mount the ISO from the VM menu and run
sudo /media/cdrom/VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
sudo reboot
Insert the Guest Additions CD image through the VirtualBox Devices menu, or attach the ISO directly.
Distribution packages
Several distributions ship Guest Additions in their own repositories, which is usually a better choice than the ISO because DKMS then rebuilds the modules automatically on kernel updates.
# Arch guest
sudo pacman -S virtualbox-guest-utils
# Fedora guest
sudo dnf install virtualbox-guest-additions
The tradeoff is that distribution packages may lag the host version. A mismatch of a point release is usually fine; a mismatch of a major version is not.
Verifying it worked
lsmod | grep vbox
VBoxClient --version
systemctl status vboxadd-service
If lsmod shows nothing, the modules did not build. Check that the kernel headers match the running kernel, which is the usual cause after a kernel upgrade.
