Guest Additions is a set of drivers and system utilities installed from inside a running virtual machine, not on the host, to smooth out the rougher edges of virtualized hardware. Without it, a VirtualBox guest generally works but feels noticeably clunkier: no automatic display resizing, no shared clipboard, and no drag-and-drop between host and guest.
What It Adds
Once installed inside a Linux guest, Guest Additions provides a proper graphics driver for dynamic resolution scaling as the VM window is resized, bidirectional shared clipboard and drag-and-drop, shared folder mounting from the host filesystem, better mouse pointer integration (no more clicking to “capture” the cursor), and time synchronization with the host.
Installing Inside a Linux Guest
With the VM running, attach this ISO as a virtual optical drive from VirtualBox’s Devices menu, then inside the guest:
sudo apt install build-essential dkms linux-headers-$(uname -r)
sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt
sudo /mnt/VBoxLinuxAdditions.run
A reboot of the guest is required after installation for the new display and input drivers to take effect.
Version Matching
Guest Additions should match the installed VirtualBox host version as closely as possible; a significant version mismatch between host and Guest Additions can cause shared folder or clipboard features to misbehave.
