TrueNAS turns a box of disks into a storage appliance. Built on Debian and OpenZFS, it serves files over SMB, NFS, and iSCSI, and handles the parts of storage administration that are tedious to do by hand: pool creation, scheduled scrubs, snapshots, and replication to another machine.
Why ZFS is the point
ZFS checksums every block and can repair corruption from redundancy, which is the feature that distinguishes a NAS from a pile of disks with a share on top. Snapshots are instant and cheap, replication to a second TrueNAS box is built in, and pools can be expanded over time. The tradeoff is memory: ZFS uses RAM aggressively for caching, and 16 GB is a realistic starting point rather than the theoretical minimum.
Sharing to the rest of the network
SMB shares serve Windows, macOS, and Linux clients with per-user authentication; NFS exports suit Linux clients on a trusted network. Most home setups end up running both, which is exactly the split covered in our NFS versus Samba guide.
System requirements
- CPU: 64-bit, 2 cores minimum
- RAM: 8 GB minimum, 16 GB or more recommended for ZFS
- Boot device: a dedicated SSD or NVMe drive, separate from the storage pool
- Storage: at least one dedicated disk for the pool; ECC memory is preferred but not required
Release cadence
TrueNAS moved from twice-yearly releases to an annual cycle with the TrueNAS 26 series, with feature packs and security updates delivered against a stable major version. The 25.10 series remains the production-recommended branch until 26 reaches general availability.
