Thunderbird 156 was released on September 15, 2026, alongside Firefox 156. We covered it in the news.
What changed
Custom OAuth for POP3. Organisations running their own identity provider can now point Thunderbird’s POP3 accounts at it, not just IMAP and SMTP. POP3 is still used deliberately where mail should be downloaded and removed from the server, and those deployments are often the ones with in-house single sign-on.
Enterprise policies. More settings can be enforced centrally by administrators, which is what decides whether software is allowed in managed environments.
Fixes across IMAP, POP3, attachments, OpenPGP, and calendars.
This continues a run of work-focused releases: 154 added Microsoft Graph support and 155 improved Exchange setup.
Installing
Most distributions package Thunderbird, though Debian and Ubuntu LTS track the Extended Support Release rather than the monthly release. For the current release everywhere, Flathub is the simplest option:
flatpak install flathub org.mozilla.Thunderbird
The tarball from the official site runs from any directory and updates itself if the directory is writable by your user.
OpenPGP
Thunderbird has built-in OpenPGP support, no Enigmail or external GnuPG needed. Our GPG basics guide covers keys and trust, which apply the same way.
