Thunderbird remains the most widely used free desktop email client, handling multiple accounts (IMAP, POP3, Exchange via add-on), a built-in calendar, RSS/news feeds, and end-to-end encryption via built-in OpenPGP support.

Release Channels

Thunderbird ships a standard Release channel updated regularly with new features, alongside an Extended Support Release (ESR) channel for users who prefer annual feature updates with monthly stability and security patches only, similar to Firefox ESR. 152.0.1 is a Release-channel version; organizations preferring more stability should track the ESR line instead.

Installing the Tarball

tar -xf thunderbird-152.0.1.tar.xz
cd thunderbird
./thunderbird

The extracted folder is self-contained and doesn’t require installation, useful for running a specific version independent of your distribution’s packaged Thunderbird, or on distributions that only ship an older release.
