Tails is an amnesic live operating system that routes all connections through Tor and forgets everything at shutdown. Version 7.14 was released on September 30, 2026, two weeks after Tails 7.13. We covered it in the news.
What changed
| Component | Version |
|---|---|
| Tor Browser | 15.0.24, with security fixes backported from Firefox 157 |
| Tor | 0.4.9.13 |
| Linux kernel | 6.12.111 |
Kernel 6.12.111 is the current 6.12 longterm release and includes the fixes for September’s four public kernel root exploits. The release also fixes the default keyboard input method when starting a session in Korean.
Upgrading
Tails 7.0 or later offers an automatic upgrade after connecting to Tor, and keeps your Persistent Storage. Accept it. Installing a fresh image instead erases Persistent Storage, so only do that for new installs.
What Tails is for
Tails is a tool for a specific threat model: leaving no trace on the computer you use, and routing everything through Tor. It is not a general-purpose desktop. For privacy on an everyday machine, hardening a normal distribution is the better approach; see our Linux security best practices.
