Proxmox VE is the hypervisor most home labs end up running. It installs as a complete operating system on bare metal, then manages KVM virtual machines and LXC containers from one web interface, with no licence key required for the software itself.
What you get out of the box
A single install brings KVM full virtualization, LXC system containers for lighter workloads, ZFS with its snapshots and replication, software-defined networking with bridges and VLANs, and clustering with live migration between nodes. The web UI covers nearly everything, which is what separates Proxmox from assembling libvirt and virt-manager by hand.
System requirements
- CPU: 64-bit with hardware virtualization (Intel VT-x or AMD-V) enabled in firmware
- RAM: 2 GB minimum for the hypervisor plus whatever the guests need; ZFS wants considerably more
- Storage: an SSD for the boot device is strongly recommended, separate from guest storage
The subscription question
Proxmox VE is open source and fully functional without a subscription. Paid subscriptions provide access to the enterprise repository and support; without one you point the machine at the no-subscription repository and dismiss a nag dialog at login. Nothing is feature-limited.
ARM64
Proxmox published its first ARM64 ISO in August 2026, extending the platform beyond x86 hardware for the first time.
